What you'd actually do
- Design real workflows — invoicing, slip assignments, work orders — then pair with engineers until the shipped thing matches the design.
- Visit customers. A few times a year you'll stand in a yard office in Maine or Maryland watching someone use your screens.
- Own the design system with our other designer: one component library, boring on purpose, documented as you go.
- Write the words. Labels, empty states, and error messages are part of the design here, not someone else's job.
- Run usability calls with real yard managers, not proxies — we book them, you lead them.
What you won't be doing
- No portfolio-driven redesigns. The product looks plain because our users are busy; your job is clarity, not spectacle.
- You won't fight for a seat at the table. Design has been in the room since the founding team.
How we hire for this role
Intro call — 30 minutes
With our design lead. Where you've worked, how you like to work, and what we're honestly like to design for.
Portfolio walk-through — 60 minutes
Two projects, your choice. We care about the decisions and trade-offs, not the polish of the shots.
Paid design exercise — half a day, $400
A real problem from our roadmap, on your schedule. Sketch-level fidelity is completely fine.
Offer within a week
Two references, numbers in writing, a week to decide. We'll tell you the band before you start the exercise.
